Dr. Desiree Strickland's path to becoming a successful public health consultant wasn't linear — and it certainly wasn't easy. She started her career as a medical assistant earning just $15 per hour, working long shifts while dreaming of making a bigger impact in public health.
After earning her MPH, Dr. Des climbed the traditional public health ladder: from a $36,000 position at the Florida Department of Health, to program administrator at $51,000, then to the Georgia Department of Health at $67,000. Each step taught her invaluable lessons about the field — and about what she truly wanted from her career.
The real turning point came when she became a CDC contractor earning $87,000, then a project manager breaking six figures. But even with that success, Dr. Des knew there was another level. In 2022, while pregnant and working full-time, she took a leap that would change everything: she started her consulting business as a side hustle.
That decision led to her first contract — $40,000 over six months with the CDC Foundation. Then came an $85,000 contract with ASTHO.
